About me

Valu's kitchen My name is Valentina, but since I was a little girl my parents have always called me Valù. As they passed on to me their love for food, cuisine and cooking traditions, I decided to call my blog Valu’s kitchen. I like the sea (obviously), sailing as well as skiing; I would like to live in a quiet place in a big city; I love sleeping, singing, dancing tango and reading Murakami; and I am moved every time I listen to “Mon Coeur s’ouvre a ta voix” sung by Maria Callas. I was born under the sign of Pisces therefore I don’t do things by half measures nor do I have a clear head, but I am sure of one thing : I am crazy about chocolate with orange! I was born in Napoli, in the South of Italy, where food and cooking traditions are everywhere, and every family has their very own tradition. It doesn’t matter which one, the importance is to have one! We Neapolitans also love to talk about food whilst we are eating! I grew up in this atmosphere, with my mother preparing lunch every day at 1 o’ clock for my brother and me, and my father with his universal theories about the proper colour that the filling of Pastiera (Easter cake) must have and the perfect consistency of Struffoli (Christmas cake) “they should not be too hard nor too soft, but just right!”

I love Napoli deeply although I have not lived there for eight years now, and perhaps that is partly why I am so attached to its cooking traditions and I feel the desire to share my passion in a blog. Or perhaps because it is simply delicious! I enjoy spending entire days cooking, exploring new recipes, photographing the dishes I make and planning dinners with friends. Often I open a cookbook and try my hand at new dishes, including the most difficult and obscure ones. I am a perfectionist and so, if something does not turn out the way I expect, I am able to try again and again until it is perfect. Sometimes I even find myself still cooking at two in the morning!

With this blog I would like to gather and share the recipes I cook, many of which my mother taught me and that remind me of my loved ones. Each recipe is linked to a memory that I want to write about and share with those who will enjoy reading it. Valu’s Kitchen is about Italian cooking, which is simple and within everybody’s abilities. The main thing is that it should be made with passion! As a good Neapolitan I have been surrounded by many people who supported me in setting up and improving this blog; my friend Anne (from Anne’s kitchen), a passionate food blogger who helped me to enter the world of food blogging. There is also Jessica, who helped me with the pictures, Francesca, who keeps me going with her enthusiasm, and my lovely friend Verena who listens to all my new ideas and projects.

What a lovely blog. My Nonno was from Napoli, and moved to Australia after WW2. My Nonna is Croatian (still going at 97!) but they spent much time in the south, so we were brought up on some beautiful traditional southern Italian food. I share your passion and look forward to checking out more of your recipes and stories! A.
